This four class DVD set is an exploration into the benefits of using yoga props to enhance your practice. When you practice along with Brittany, Chanelle, Kendra and Suzy under Jules Mitchell’s expert instruction, you will experience common yoga poses with a fresh perspective. The first three classes are what we call Active Restoration, where you can expect movement and effort. The fourth class is Passive Restoration, where the poses are effortless and restful.
Each Active Restoration class begins with a theme, developed around a particular muscular action or skill, and weaves this theme throughout the sequence of poses. After a dynamic warm up, static poses are introduced and generally build in intensity. Several passive restorative poses close each class.
Jules gives a detailed description of how the classes are sequenced and a description of Yapana, the style of yoga in which Active Restoration Yoga is taught, in the first track on Disc One, titled "Introduction."
The Passive Restoration class is the greatest gift on the DVD set. All of the poses are practiced lying down. You are invited to remain in the poses longer than the class provides time for, so keep the remote near to pause the video for as long as you feel inclined. Jules offers some appropriate hold times throughout the class, but most importantly we encourage you to listen to your body. Beneficial postural changes occur when you slow down enough to pause and rest in the various poses. So enjoy as long as you can!
Jules artfully shows you how to determine what sort of prop setup might be best for you. She begins each pose with a general way of positioning the props and then works with each student, explaining why more or less support is good for that individual. Her goal is to empower you to discover your needs and observe the physical changes over time.
